Ferrovia Firenze Borgo S. Lorenzo
Ponte del Calderaio-Pian del Mugnone

Before going ahead (or north or uphill as you prefer) a note on the pictures on these pages: These images have been taken in different times, in 1987, in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
And some others also in 1999 when line have been reopened.
The images taken in november 1996 and july 1997 have "normal" names, the ones of 1987 have a name that begin with 87, the ones in 1997 and later have names of the type *yym*  where yy are the two last figures of the year m is the month (j is june, g is january, y is may).
Some are still pictures, other frames from movie. If you need a better image i can send you the BMP uncompressed.
So if you find a amage that you would like for a wallpaper just drop me a line and I will post the uncompressed one.
Remember that these images are for private use only, if you add in a publication you are required to quote the origin and send me a copy ....

Returning to our virtual trip on the Firenze-Borgo S. Lorenzo line on left a view of the Ponte del Calderaio, it was the first (and for a long time the only) work in the rebuilding of this section of line in 1957, on the right the ROW along the SS302, with the concrete plates to cover the canal for cables. The picture was taken in 1987, the cables have not yet layed..

Below a general view of the same place taken in 1996. The grass has grown, but still no sign of rails ... (right corner is the same lace of the above right picture)

On the image (may 1997) you see the entrance of the second tunnel of the line, and the road that cross the old railbed. During the rehabilitation the road have been moved to the right, so avoiding a grade crossing.
In the two pictures below on left the situation in 1987 as soon the tunnel had been "refurbished" and at right januray 1998, with the road on the new site and a fence where there was the grade crossing.

Again as for the other places the inaugural train. This section is available also as a full featured movie.:

Soon after the tunnel one of the new stops: Pian del Mugnone, that you can see on the big picture above.
The stop here was build in 1987 and here have some pictures taken while the work were in progress to widen an underpass and to build the new stop (a simple platform ... btw)

Below we have an old underpass rehabilitated and "improved" (it had a stream under it, now is the pedestrian underpass) and the view of the new stop, (trak have to be on right) copletw with a large parking that althought unused now need a repaving ...

The images above have been taken in 1987 (left) and january 1998 (right). Below the images on 1999, same places:

From here to next station of Caldine the line is all on the side of the hill.
From 1987 to today [I wrote it in 1998] has been one of the preferred trails in the area, being quite scenic, without traffic, near the city and about 2 km long an completely flat.

Now it is going.

My latest walk was on 1/1/98 when I shot this picture and the one with the fence, and I fear/hope it was the last one ...
Of course the renewed railway will get faster to other trails.
Also if you get bus 21 from Firenze to Ponte del Bersaglio (Or get the train to Caldine) then walk on the road to S.Lorenzo a Basciano, Montorsoli, then the road to Cercina, always in view of the railway, but more important in wonderful scenery, then walk down to Firenze you will spend about 5 hors walking very proficuoulsy. Or you can follow more closely the railway turning left before S. Lorenzo toward Pian di S. Bartolo.

Apparently the only work done in the years have been changing the iron bridge whit a concrete one and rejoining the fence.
On the image top you see the bridge as were in 1987, tht is in the original conditions.
Look at the original 1890 cast pedestal in the particular at right and the new, extruded ones on right on large picture at left.

Above the marking on an underpass to be used at progressive for works.

Along the line there were a house, that at the time was in complete abandonement, but now have been sold and is inhabitated.
The one on the right is the view from that ex-railway house.

We are now arrived at the station of Caldine, the argument of next Page ..
