In memory of uncle Umberto, that died while i was preparing this page ... 28.3.1998

Ferrovia Firenze Borgo S. Lorenzo
Basciano

We are arrived at Basciano, the train arrive throught a tunnel, we walked on a small road under the trees ... Anyway this is the place where the railbed reappear and is easily accessible.
This is one of the most beautiful places on this line, and can be easily done walking, semaining always a little above or below the line.

Look at the small guard house, perfectly maintained, and with the old water well with the arch in in hammered iron (there is also one in the Vaglia station)..
But is not this our target ...

We are beginning to see our destination:

Yes ... is this bridge, that was destroyed during WW2 by german troops and of which remained only one arch.
The bridge have been rebuilt with the same aspect, althought the 4 renewed arches are in concrete and not stone, stone and bricks have been put only on exterior.
Also the part toward south you can see on the particular abolve in origin was a iron trestle, Under rebuild this parte is a filling, and the road underpass it. You can ee the state of works in january 1998 on thesecond to last picture in this page, and the end during this short videoclip tken fron the train

These are particulars of the remaining original arch ...

And this is the bridge, on both sides ....

Again a particular of the joind between old and new part ....

Another view throught the trees and the old northern ramp.

Before leaving the site toward Montorsoli a look of the new underpass. It was not yet completed, so it was the last place were one on 1.1.98 could not travel along the railway, either on rail or on truck .... Just a curiosity.
As of april 1998 the tracks have been completely relaid on this section.

But before leaving this place the image of the first train:

First Train on Basciano Viaduct

And again a short videoclip entering from west (sorry for rain!)

Now we leave this bucolic place to Montorsoli, so if you want to continue the trip just click on the link ....
